Downtown, plant-filled, and opened by an ETSU grad, this is the one students actually name when you ask. Huge tea list, real seating, open-mic nights, and the kind of place you can camp out in with a laptop.

The oldest independent coffee shop in the Tri-Cities, right downtown. Serious espresso and pour-overs, local art on the walls, and a steady mix of students and artists.

If your study aesthetic is dark academia, this is your spot. Tucked into Burlington Park on McKinley Road, with Poe-themed roasts and quiet corners made for finals week.

Come for the Butterbeer Latte that locals will not shut up about, stay because it is an easy central-city stop between class and home.

Cheap eats

Downtown on the corner of Main and Roan, this is the go-to slice for a group that is splitting one check four ways.

A Johnson City staple for hand-tossed pizza, strombolis, and wings, and it delivers, which matters at 11 p.m. on a Tuesday.

Sixteen kinds of taco inside the Yee-Haw brewery downtown. Cheap, weird in the best way, and open late enough to matter.

The chrome drive-thru with the giant food on the roof is a full East Tennessee rite of passage. Order the Sauceburger and a Frenchie fry and thank us later.

Nights out

The anchor of the downtown scene, built inside a 130-year-old Tweetsie train depot with a big patio, live music, and White Duck Taco attached. Bring the dog, it is that kind of place.

The city's original craft brewery on East Main, small and friendly with a patio and a fire pit. Order the Little Chicago Stout for the local name-drop.

A smaller downtown taproom that rounds out an easy brewery crawl. Everything down here is within a short walk of everything else, which is the whole appeal.

A long-running downtown music venue for when you want live acts over another bar night. Check the calendar before you go.

Get outside

the reason people love it here

Over 40 acres of professionally built trails within riding distance of downtown, with a paved pump track, a beginner-friendly section, and a 300-foot ridgeline view over the city. You do not need a bike to hike it.

A flat, ten-mile crushed-gravel rail-trail running from Johnson City to Elizabethton. Easy walk, run, or ride, and it connects to the ETSU trail system.

A 750-acre city park with easy-to-follow hikes and overlooks of the whole valley. The classic "I need to touch grass before this exam" reset.

Twenty to thirty minutes out you have lake days, tubing, and rafting near Erwin, where the Appalachian Trail runs through town. Prime weekend material when the weather is nice.

Student Commons sits on the BucShot route, ETSU’s free shuttle run through Johnson City Transit. Show your ETSU ID and you ride free. The Blue route loops the west side of campus, the side that serves this community, about every 15 minutes on weekdays, so you can leave the car parked and skip the campus parking hunt entirely. There is evening service too, plus a call-ahead Safe Voyage option after dark. Your ETSU ID also gets you on every regular Johnson City Transit city route for free, which is how you get downtown and back without driving.

Prefer to drive? You have a reserved parking spot at the community, and downtown, campus, and the interstate are all a short hop.
